Persian gallery apis on a red background, set with a pretty framing frieze around its edge. Low wool, fine antique rug. Circa 1920. Rolling out the red carpet is an expression that means to give a warm welcome. It is a way of making the passage of a guest a true ceremony. Red is the color used to characterize the solemnity of the event. In its earliest known incarnation, the red carpet was not intended for ordinary people. A dark red tapestries runner was rolled out in ancient greece, in aeschylus' play agamemnon, when clytemnestra, the king's vengeful wife, prepares to triumphantly welcome her husband back from the trojan war. A real centerpiece in a luxurious interior such as a hotel or castle. Dimensions: 472x94 cm condition: used, wear and tear = shades in the red (and 2 marked red lines) on one of the final parts of the carpet which is more visible in one direction than in the other. It is a very old and very fine carpet, in its original condition.
