Among Kai Kristiansen’s most recognisable designs, the model “42” chair is distinguished by a construction in which the structure and its carefully resolved joints play a central role in the design. Made of oak, the four chairs feature tapered, slightly splayed legs, with angled rear uprights extending upwards to support the characteristic lateral elements of the backrest. The backrest itself is one of the model’s most distinctive features: the upholstered panel is suspended between two sculpted wooden supports, joined to the rear uprights and terminating in pronounced pointed ends, a detail that gives the chair’s profile much of its character. Visible circular wooden pins emphasise the connection points and become an integral part of the design. The open structure gives the backrest a visually suspended appearance and lends lightness to the overall composition, while highlighting the sculptural treatment of the oak. The seats and backrests have recently been reupholstered in ivory bouclé fabric, whose textured surface creates a subtle contrast with the pronounced grain and warm tone of the wood. Model “42” clearly reflects Kristiansen’s approach to Danish furniture of the period, deriving its identity from precise joinery, continuity of line and a small number of highly distinctive construction details.
