Eero Saarinen, architect of the Tulip chair

Eero Saarinen (1910-1961) designed in fifteen years some of the most iconic forms of the 20th century. An American architect of Finnish origin, he signed the TWA terminal at JFK, the Gateway Arch in Saint Louis, and at Knoll, furniture that defines the very idea of American modernism: the Tulip chair (1956) on a single pedestal, the Womb armchair (1948), the No. 71 chair. His philosophy? 'The mess of four legs must stop.' Elegance as principle.

The Tulip chair, Tulip table and Womb armchair, all edited by Knoll, remain Eero Saarinen's most iconic pieces. Three seats and a table that on their own became the language of modern American design, to find second-hand to build an interior of silent elegance.
