Gaetano Pesce, the Italian radical of the Up5 chair
Gaetano Pesce (1939-2024) is one of the most radical Italian designers of the second half of the 20th century. An architect, designer and artist trained in Venice, he signed in 1969 for B&B Italia the Up5&6 armchair: a feminine seat in polyurethane foam, delivered vacuum-packed, which deploys spectacularly when the package opens, connected to a ball pouf, a feminist statement ahead of its time. The Feltri armchair for Cassina, the 543 Broadway collection, and a whole body of work where design is a political and poetic manifesto would follow.
The Up5&6 armchair B&B Italia and the Feltri armchair Cassina remain Gaetano Pesce's most iconic pieces. Italian vintage furniture to find for those wanting to bring into their interior a radical statement of contemporary design.
