Jiří Jiroutek, Czech modular storage
Jiří Jiroutek (born 1925) is a Czech designer whose production of modular furniture marked Central European furniture in the 1960s. A designer for Czechoslovak national industry, he designed in 1958 the U-450 system, then the famous U-453 (1963): storage modules in teak or walnut veneered wood, with sliding or hinged doors, which can be assembled into bookshelves, display cases, sideboards as needed. A democratic production, mass-produced in the Holešov factories, which equipped modern Czech interiors for three decades.
The U-453 system remains Jiří Jiroutek's signature piece. Czech vintage furniture to find for those wanting Central European modular storage, rediscovered in recent years by lovers of forgotten design.
