René Herbst, inventor of the Sandows chair
René Herbst (1891-1982) is one of the founders of French modernism. An interior architect, he participated in 1929 in the founding of the Union des Artistes Modernes (UAM) alongside Le Corbusier, Charlotte Perriand, Robert Mallet-Stevens and Eileen Gray. His Sandows chair (1928), with a chromed tubular steel structure and seat tensioned by Sandow elastics, remains one of the manifestos of French modernism: not a gram extra, not a tenth of a centimetre useless. A piece where France answers Bauhaus.
The Sandows chair in tubular steel and elastics remains René Herbst's signature piece, reissued by Formes Nouvelles. Vintage French furniture to find for those wanting a classic of Parisian Roaring Twenties modernism.
