Romantica living room set by Piero Ranzani for Elam in walnut Italy 1950s

Salon set 'Romantica' by Piero Ranzani for Elam in dark wood and walnut, Italy, 1950s What stands out are the straight lines of the wooden construction against the rounded shapes of the cushions and seats. There are nice details in the distinct shapes of the multilayer feet in different kinds of darker hardwood and walnut, as well as a metal foot that forms a small ridge around the foot. Sometimes the edges of the legs are cut diagonally. What also stands out is the minimal construction of the backrest that offers very good support thanks to two solid metal plates folded, which gives a good mix of materials: metal, wood and fabric to soften everything. Overall, this is a very interesting living room set, mainly because of its minimal lines and shapes, almost Artifort type curves in the cushion.... (but then in the 50s) and a very good mix of materials. Piero Ranzani was, like Gio Ponti for example, one of the first to use metal in this way, which made it possible to achieve more minimalist constructions, leaving room for new possibilities such as the emphasis on fabric and upholstery in this case. This is why we advise to reupholster in a very high quality wool such as Frey Stone and then a slightly colored version. Would harmonize very well with dark wood and fresh metal, but also with high quality as the fabric is very well visible. The sofa desperately needs new padding and a new cushion (without losing those beautiful curves of course....).
