Majolica-style oyster plate or seafood platter by Vallauris Faience with a traditional-style inspired design but distinctly mid-century décor of "fat-lava" glazes. The terracotta shape under the glazes shows a typical printed design of marine motifs; corals, scallops, fish and lobsters. The body was then covered with a background of earthy hues, blue and brown glazes that give natural depth, and finally, drip glaze highlights were added by hand to represent algae and underwater life. They combine in a dramatic and intriguing combination of naturalistic and figurative techniques. The pottery of Vallauris in southern France is associated with the work of Pablo Picasso, who settled in the city in 1948, built his "Temple of Peace" in 1952, and whose presence inspired the revival of the local pottery industry. Made by the craftsmen of Vallauris, this unusual object is totally intact (and in particular the lemon-shaped handle is also in perfect condition). This piece of French provincial ceramics is meant to function as an ideal centerpiece or draw attention to a seafood buffet, whether it's filled with oysters, seafood, shallots, or sauce.
