Office chair by Jacob & Josef Kohn 1920

The office/dining chair was produced by the renowned josef and jacob kohn company. Kohn along with thonet was the biggest producer of the bentwood furniture at the turn of the 19th century. Their main office was based in vienna but their factories were located in various places around the former austro-hungarian empire (the main factory was in vsetin, now in the czech republic). This piece is a fine example of the quality and comfort that came to be synonymous the the kohn company; the trademark use of bent wooden parts that both act to give the chair extra stability as well as a form of abstract decoration. This chair is believed to be produced around 1910 when there was an obvious switch to a less decorative wood (compared to kohn’s earlier pieces) and instead more of a focus on the natural beauty of the wood - in this case a stunning burgundy wood finish - and the overall ergonomics of the chair. A chair in great vintage condition without any damage. The frame has been strengthened in a recent restoration that has fully revived the extremely rich burgundy colour and showing off patterns on all surfaces. The entire piece has been hand finished by shellac and nitro varnishes in order to achieve a greater gloss finish.
