Unique large piece of art / play object by the dutch artist godfried lonis (1916-2007), made in the 1970s. It is made of 72 rotatable cubes with sides in the primary colours red, yellow and blue and all cubes have 1 mirrored side. It has a grey metal frame and a black lacquered pear wood base with black laminate on top. The whole piece is quite heavy but it is on wheels. It can serve wonderfully as a room divider. We have the confirmation from his son this is an original work by the artist (email available on request). This piece of art is in good original condition. Some traces of wear. Godfried lonis (20th of september 1916 – 8th of january 2007) was a prolific dutch artist known in particular for his sculptures, usually composed of wood, glass, perspex and mirrors, and often reconfigurable or interactive. A part of the hague neo constructivists, his art is based on the philosophical idea of the playful human, homo-ludens. His art inspired the viewer to interact with the art, becoming a piece of it by re-arranging pieces, or even walking by and seeing different reflections and movements appear. He experimented in the op-art realm by using mathematical rhythms in mirrored pieces, and contrasting colors in wooden panels. In 1966 godfried had made his very first mirrored object which he submitted to the art show/ competition de haagse salon. He won 1st prize, and around that time also became a member of the haagse kunstkring. This recognition inspired him to further develop his art, and soon joined gallery orez (in the javastraat) along with fellow ‘haagse neo constructivisten’ jan schoonhoven, and lon pennock. After doing a number of group art shows, he joined gallerie nouvelles images, owned by ton berends. Here he started receiving larger commissions for architectural and interior art pieces.
