Set of two Loungechairs and a 3-seater Sofa by Illum Wikkelsø for Niels Eilersen in teak and fabric. The fabric is always in very good condition, clean and neat, and the teak wood is very shiny and vibrant. A luxurious living room set with anthropomorphic shapes so typical of Danish design. Although very little biographical information remains about the Danish architect and designer Illum Wikkelsø (1919-1999), the rich and organic quality of his creations found on the vintage market confirms his status as an active supporter of post-war Scandinavian modernism. Like most Danish designers of the time, Wikkelsø studied cabinetmaking and graduated from the Copenhagen School of Arts and Crafts. He then held positions with cabinetmaker Jacob Kjaer and the architectural firm of Peter Hvidt and Orla Molgaard-Nielsen. In 1944, Wikkelsø moved to Århus to work as an interior designer. In 1954, he began to design his own furniture and, a few years later, he created a workshop. Like many of his Danish contemporaries – Arne Jacobsen, Finn Juhl and Hans Wegner, for example – Wikkelsø's designs emphasize formal simplicity and biomorphic silhouettes. Mr. Wikkelsø's training in woodworking has given him a deep understanding of materials and excellent attention to detail. Working with teak and rosewood, he captured delicately sculptural forms. Wikkelsø believed that furniture should be built to last while enveloping the body and pleasing the eye. Among Wikkelsø's best-known creations are the T118 coffee table (circa 1950), the Gyngestol rocking chair (1958) and the Model 91 chaise longue and ottoman for Mikael Laursen (circa 1959), among others. A number of Danish manufacturers produced Wikkelsø's designs, such as C.F. Christensen, Holger Christiansen, Eilersen, Farstrup, Silkeborg and Søren Willadsen.
