Description
Authentic African art. Old Kuba mask from Congo/Zaire from the beginning of the 20th century. Large royal mask with geometric and polychrome patterns (the streaks under the eyes symbolize tears). Raffia embroidered with cowrie shells representing wealth. The cowrie shell was a currency of exchange among certain African tribes. These masks were once used during ritual ceremonies; such as induction rites or funerals. Some wear marks on the cowries, 1 or 2 gaps and seams to be reinforced. A good cleaning should be planned on the areas of raffia supporting the pearls. Otherwise good general condition despite the age and fragility of the materials. Rare and particularly decorative mask due to its history and aesthetics. Dimensions: Height: 40 cm. Width: 22 cm. Depth: 13.5 cm. Careful delivery possible.
