Georges GONTHIER (Condé-sur-Escaut 1886-1969 Le Havre) Subject: woodland landscape. Medium: oil on wood. Frame dimensions: 55 X 47 cm. Painting dimensions: 45.5 X 38 cm. Period: early 20th century. Signed 'G. Gonthier' bottom right. Georges Gonthier, trained by Fortuné Layraud, a laureate of the Prix de Rome, pursued a career as an art teacher and specialised in landscape painting. In 1907, he became a drawing teacher in Fécamp, then moved to Le Havre in 1914, where he taught at the École Régionale des Beaux-Arts from 1924. His works primarily depict the landscapes of the North, Brittany, Savoie, and the surroundings of Le Havre. Our painting captures a sunset over the countryside, highlighting a chromatic work that gives intensity to the sky, adorned with clouds in shades of pink and orange, reminiscent of the Impressionist movement. From 1924 onwards, Gonthier exhibited regularly in Paris, notably at the Salon of the Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts and the Salon des Artistes Indépendants. A retrospective exhibition of his work was held at the Musée d’Art moderne du Havre.
