Antique table with two drawers in pine – Central Europe, circa 1910

This antique table with two pine wood drawers features a belt divided into two drawers with porcelain knobs and rests on tapered legs reinforced by vertical slats. It originates from Central Europe, from the early 20th century, where the pine was assembled with visible mortise and tenon joints. The bundle of vertical slats under the belt is a characteristic of Central European Jugendstil, which replaces the historicist volute with a light, orthogonal framework. It applies to both fine cabinetry and painted domestic production like this one. The frame is made of pine, with two full-depth drawers on wooden slides. The assembly keys remain visible on the lower rail, appearing as small dark rectangles. The top consists of joined, unpainted boards. The cream paint has worn away on the edges and corners, revealing a previous dark green layer and, underneath, the pine. The top has lost its finish and shows stains and open joints. This is a clear wear, which no repainting has corrected. It serves as an entrance console, a light desk, or a side table near a window.
