This large vase from the 1960s, made by the les argonautes workshop (isabelle ferlay (1917-2009) and frédérique bourguet (1925-1997)) perfectly embodies the aesthetic of 20th-century french ceramic design, combining organic textures and contrasting finishes. The vase is cylindrical and slender. The lower part is covered with a speckled white-grey glaze, providing a smooth surface. The upper part has a textured brown glaze with embossed patterns, evoking plant stems or abstract forms, adding a sculptural effect. The vase is signed under its base "les argonautes" each argonautes piece is unique, characterized by distinct shaping and glazing techniques. The influence of the brutalist and wabi-sabi movements is felt in the contrast between smooth and textured surfaces. Les argonautes workshop: founded in 1953 in vallauris, les argonautes is renowned for its ceramic creations featuring clean lines and nature-inspired patterns. It is part of the post-war ceramic revival tradition, alongside other influential ceramists such as georges jouve and jacques and dani ruelland.
