A lovely large antique french water jug, water pitcher or gargoulette from the south of france. It is thought to have been hand made in the late 18th century and was primarily used as a water jug during the summer months, the thick earthenware helping to keep it cool and the unglazed base allowing for refreshing evaporation. It was originally designed to carry water to workers in the fields without spilling, hence the shape with a small opening. The earthenware clay ensures that the contents remain cool as they would be half buried in the ground. It has a beautifully rounded body that tapers towards the base with a traditional hanging handle and small spout. With its wonderful shape, large belly and beautiful earthenware patina, this antique jug or pitcher has so much charm and history. Dimensions: height: 12.2" (31cm); diameter: 10.2" (26cm).
