A true wabi sabi piece: a French workers' stool whose beauty comes from age, wear and repair, all left exactly as found. This three-legged stool came from France and dates to the early 20th century. It is hand-shaped from solid wood, with faceted legs, a chamfered seat and a concave-sided triangular shelf that braces the legs. Several layers of old paint, yellow under green under a darker top coat, have cracked into a deep, bark-like alligatored surface, with yellow and green showing through the fissures. One foot was spliced with a replacement section during the stool's working life and fixed with a nail, now rusted. The repair was made to keep the stool in use, and it remains visible. The cracked paint, the early repair and the worn seat are what make this piece exceptional: its character comes from being used and mended rather than replaced. Stools of this form were made for farm and workshop use, as a low work seat or a perch beside a bench. The shelf between the legs also served as a footrest or a place for tools. Origin: France. Period: circa 1900s. Dimensions: H 28 cm, W ( seat ) 26 cm, D ( seat )26 cm. Condition: sturdy and stable, with honest wear throughout. The paint is cracked and lifting in places, especially on the legs, and loose flakes may continue to shed. There is a natural grain split in the seat, and one foot has an old repair. Sold as found, unrestored.
