Antique trestle table made of pine wood – Central Europe, circa 1900

This antique trestle table made of pine rests on two cross frames joined by a central beam, with a top made of planks secured by battens on the underside. It originates from Central Europe, dating from the early 20th century, where the pine was joined using mortise and tenon joints with dowels. The cross trestle is among the oldest solutions in European rural furniture: it allows for the assembly and disassembly of the table and distributes the load without a skirt. It was used in kitchens and workrooms, where the top was frequently scrubbed. The cross braces are joined at half-lap and secured by a dowelled cross beam. The top consists of pine planks of varying widths, with open joints and edges rounded by use. The top has lost all finish and presents a light honey tone, with deep grain and dark stains. The green of the legs has worn down to the wood on the edges and supports, revealing remnants of a previous red. The contrast between the bare wood and the painted legs gives the piece its character.
