This figurine enjoyed great success in the 19th century and was widely copied and reproduced in bronze, marble, and bisque. The most popular bisque models are those by Dihl and Guérhard. Long attributed to the Italian sculptor Antonio Canova, original works by Charles-Gabriel Sauvage, known as Lemire, have been discovered in the Louvre's collections. Our figurine is of fine quality (without chips or cracks), signed "Canova" 6401, and bears Samson's mark: an interlaced S.
