This remarkable print represents the Alcázar of Toledo, an imposing fortress overlooking the city from its rocky promontory above the Tagus River. The artist chose a spectacular panoramic viewpoint that highlights the monumentality of the palace as well as the urban organisation of the former Castilian capital, where squares, streets, and monuments unfold at the foot of the building. One of the oldest and most prestigious cities in Spain, Toledo was successively a Roman city, the capital of the Visigoth kingdom, and then a major centre of Al-Andalus before its reconquest by Christian rulers in the 11th century. An exceptional intellectual and cultural crossroads, it remains one of the most eloquent testimonies to the meeting of Christian, Jewish, and Muslim traditions that shaped the history of the Iberian Peninsula. The monument depicted is the Alcázar of Toledo, whose origins date back to antiquity. Occupying the highest point of the city, it was successively fortified by the Romans, the Visigoths, and Muslim rulers before being profoundly transformed in the 16th century under the reign of Emperor Charles V. The architects Alonso de Covarrubias and Juan de Herrera then gave it its imposing Renaissance appearance, making the building one of the most prestigious symbols of the Spanish monarchy. This engraving belongs to the tradition of topographical views that enjoyed immense success in Enlightenment Europe. Long before the invention of photography, these representations allowed enthusiasts, travellers, and collectors to discover the great cities and the most remarkable monuments of the continent. They contributed to the dissemination of geographical and architectural knowledge while catering to the growing taste of the elites for travel, erudition, and discovery. The work was created using the technique of soft-ground etching on copper. The drawing was engraved onto a metal plate.
