Vintage ceramic dessert plate from Gien – peony design

Vintage dessert plate in fine earthenware, featuring a remarkably generous polychrome floral decoration. The central motif showcases fully bloomed peonies with finely detailed petals, in a rich palette blending burgundy, golden ochre, cobalt blue, and green, supported by gnarled branches with multicoloured foliage inspired by the East. The scalloped border, highlighted with a russet line and a band of swirling blue scrolls, elegantly frames the scene. This lush decoration, influenced by Chinese and Japanese ceramics, reflects the mastery of the Gien factory. Founded in 1821, this pottery is renowned for the richness of its hand-painted decorations and high-temperature firing.
