At 17, he enrolled at the prestigious école boulle where he learned art history and trained as a sculptor. It was during these years of study that he acquired the nickname apollo, which he would keep. Graduating in 1929, jouve continued his training by attending several independent painting academies (jullian and grande chaumière in particular). After beginning a career as a theater designer, jouve was drafted during the second world war. Imprisoned by the germans, he escaped in 1943 and returned to his mediterranean roots by taking refuge in dieulefit (in the drôme) until the liberation. It was there that he discovered the art of ceramics, notably with the ceramist étienne noël, for whom he made decorative objects and religious figurines inspired by santons. Jouve returned to paris in 1944 and set up his studio on rue de la tombe-issoire. There, the artist quickly moved away from traditional pottery, abandoning wheel work to hand-model creations, which became true abstract sculptures, punctuated by a unique sense of volume and color. Among them, and in particular, the artist is famous for his matte black which dresses minimalist forms with depth and sensuality and great evocative power. He exhibits in various galleries and regularly participates in the salons de l'imagerie.
