Modernist Bedside Table

This is an modernist bedside table believed to be produced in former czechoslovakia by slezak company. This particular design can be found in slezak catalogues from the 1930’s as model n6. The slezak company was one of the leading czech furniture producers. They were making different variations of modernist tubular furniture from chairs, tables to beds and wardrobes. The concept of the furniture made of tubular steel was first developed by avant-garde architects around the legendary bauhaus school of design. The main design feature of this piece is the wooden cube with a distinct pattern that is suspended from its elegant tubular frame. The table has single door with a round steel handle with an orange bakelite plate on the top. This bedside table is a great example of avant-garde modernist design of the 1930’s. Simple yet striking and practical. There were different variations of this desired piece of furniture as it was an essential item for every modern bedroom of the time. The bedside table is in good vintage condition, all hardware and fittings are original – the handle, screws, hinges and feet. Both the chrome tubular steel frame and the wooden parts show some minor patina and wear. The wooden surface has got a patina mainly on the top surfaced gained from it’s use over the years.
