Magnificent series of 12 george nakashima chairs (1905-1990) an exceptional pair of conoid chairs by the patriarch of the pennsylvania craft movement, george nakashima, among the last he carved before his death. In carved black walnut, crossed by a tactile red and blond grain, beautifully highlighted by nakashima's skill in woodworking and his respect for the material, and pins in blond hickory. The chair's bold design – physically stable but seemingly impossible – has the seat cantilevered on just two legs, a model of balance and boldness that speaks to both nakashima's training as an architect and the understanding of balance he derived from eastern and western religious philosophies. With a flowing sculpted seat that echoes the human form, a curved back and long, tapered horizontal legs that distribute weight evenly and are particularly suited to carpeted rooms. Dimensions: 35.5" h X 20.5" w X 21" d.
