Antique painting on panel 17th century, The Martyrdom of Saint Stephen

COD 11300. Rare Italian religious painting from the first half of the 17th century. Oil on panel artwork depicting the martyrdom of Saint Stephen, difficult to find. At the centre of the composition we find the first Christian martyr, with the traditional red deacon's dalmatic, while he is being stoned. Around him we see his executioners intent on throwing large stones. Above the Saint a celestial vision, a glory of clouds with God the Father and Christ ready to welcome the soul of the Saint. Painting of notable pictorial quality, the warm chromaticism, the well-studied draperies and the dramatic gestures recall the late Mannerist Lombard school. 20th century frame in carved and gilded wood, with some signs of aging. Painting already restored with resumption of colour in some places, overall in good condition. Internal size H 104 X W 82 cm.
