Description
Marc held is a french architect, designer and photographer known for his functional furniture developed in the 1960s. During a visit to the fritz hansen factory in denmark, held came across employees who were working on an unassembled egg chair by arne jacobsen. Seeing the egg chair swing from side to side gave him so much satisfaction that he decided to create a chair that could swing and swivel without requiring mechanical articulation. The first prototype of the chair was carved from a massive block of balsa. 5 prototypes of the culbuto chair were presented in 1967 in paris and were an immediate success. This allowed held to sign a contract with knoll, and three years later, in 1970, the culbuto chair was finally launched, but unfortunately did not have the commercial success it deserved.
