Absolutely beautiful knife painting of women carrying burdens on their heads. Signed by louis koyongonda. Oil on panel. Belgium congo between 1940 and 1960. Knife painting. Unframed. The paintings of this well-known african painter of the congolese school are frequently on sale on many auction houses such as drouot in france. He was born in 1918 and died in 1999. He was one of the young congolese painters who met at stanley pool in the late 40s. Whether or not conformity to nature is a basic principle, the painters of the belgian congo were called upon by their sponsors to release a creative energy that was supposed to have been preserved, even in large cities, from any contact with other forms of art existing in the world. The knife is a kind of flexible steel trowel, it allows a painting that, by its reliefs, catches the light and gives life to the painting. Painting with a knife allows the painter to develop a personal and powerful style. Painting textures, but also gestural painting, knife painting also allows a very abstract approach to the subject, a simple suggestion of things while remaining figurative. Knife painting has become a specialty in which several african painters excel and this painting is an exceptional example. Democratic republic of the congo. 1950/1960 belgium congo.
