This hand carved & hand painted wooden serving tray was made in Sulawesi, Indonesia in 1994 (signed at the back). It has an octagonal, oval shape and in the center is the design of a rooster with its feeding bowl. The rooster is surrounded by borders of tribal and geometric patterns. An absolute stunning piece of craftsmenship made in the Toraja wood carving style. Toraja wood carving is an intricate, highly symbolic traditional art form from the Toraja people of South Sulawesi, Indonesia. Far from mere decoration, it is a visual language representing philosophy, social status, fertility, and the deep connection between humans, nature, and ancestors. Known for deep, geometric rhythms and stylized motifs of animals, plants, and cosmic elements. Traditionally crafted using highly durable Uru wood, prized for its resistance to decay.
