This american black walnut chest of drawers is a superb testament to george nakashima's craftsmanship. Made at the request of a private client in 1955, the angular shapes of the piece and its refined structure allow wood, nakashima's favorite material, to stand out with its visible natural ribs and knots. The chest of drawers has three full-size drawers and one smaller one. The drawer handles are fused into the body of the chest of drawers and provide a subtle but defining detail to the piece, giving it a durable and timeless design. This chest of drawers has been restored, varnished to avoid adding too much shine, it is in superb condition. The chest of drawers is signed on the back with the name of its sponsor, mr. Manny hillman. A copy of the original receipt dated june 1955 and a certificate of authenticity from mira nakashima will be provided to the buyer. George nakashima (1905-1990) was a japanese-american architect, cabinetmaker and furniture maker considered the father of the “american craft” movement. Recognized for his fascination and his instinctive sense of working with natural elements, from 1949 he devoted his entire career and his range of creation to wood, a material that he chose himself. George nakashima favors the enhancement of a beautiful piece of wood in simple shapes, coming from japanese tradition and the beginnings of american artisanal tradition. His rich know-how and his deep respect for the material combine in the creation of timeless pieces of great simplicity, with pure lines and delicate proportions.
