Vintage 1950 pocket bowl – East German ceramics

A superb testimony to the organic design of the 1950s. This bowl or large ceramic catchall from East Germany (marked West-Germany 444 in relief on the back) in the Organic style stands out for its beautiful asymmetrical free form, very characteristic of the Mid-Century Modern movement. The decorative work is particularly graphic: a grey background with a satin matte finish, animated by fine sgraffito-like incisions and large dark elongated patterns. Two small touches of pastel colour (purple and yellow) in slight relief add a touch of elegance to the whole.
