Mid-Century lounge chairs by J. Kędziorek, 1960s, set of 2.

This set of two GFM-87 armchairs was designed by Juliusz Kędziorek and manufactured in Poland in the 1960s. It is one of the most interesting examples of post-war design in Central and Eastern Europe. The designs from this period, although less recognisable than Scandinavian designs, stand out for their excellent ergonomics and well-thought-out lightweight form – which is clearly evident in this model. The structure is made of beech wood, ensuring stability and durability while allowing for elegant and clean lines. Notable features include slightly splayed legs and curved armrests that harmoniously integrate with the backrest. The overall impression is light but not fragile – it is a piece of furniture designed for everyday use. The wooden elements have been renovated, involving stripping the old finishes and re-oiling them. The aim was to preserve the natural, light, and warm colour of the beech wood. The seat and backrest have been covered in beige boucle fabric. The cushioning foam has also been replaced. The style of these armchairs can be described as mid-century modern, with a clear influence from the Polish design school of the 1960s – more understated than their Danish counterparts, but just as functional. The proportions are very well balanced: the low, wide seat and slightly inclined backrest promote comfort while giving the design a distinctive and relaxing character. What really works in favour of this model is its ease of use and versatility. The armchairs provide good back support, and the armrests are at a sensible height for everyday seating. Thanks to their compact dimensions, they fit well in living rooms as classic armchairs and in more intimate spaces where every centimetre counts. The light, neutral upholstery harmonises well with the warm tone of the wood, making them easy to integrate into a variety of arrangements – from minimalist to more eclectic. Seat height: 41 cm
