Two-seater sofa model "Bastiano", of exceptional elegance and rarity, designed by Tobia Scarpa with Afra Scarpa for Gavina, Italy, circa 1960. The son of Venetian architect Carlo Scarpa, Tobia Scarpa, along with his wife Afra, is among the great creators of post-war Italian design. The Bastiano is one of their most well-known creations; after Gavina was acquired by Knoll, it was produced there from 1968. It remains one of the great classics of Italian Mid-Century Modern design. The construction follows a clear architectural principle: a frame made of wide flat pieces of wood forms the sides and back, onto which the cushions are placed freely. The sofa thus combines a rigorous shape with generous and relaxed comfort. The frame is made of dark mahogany with beautiful reddish hues. The original cushions are covered in vintage black leather that has developed a magnificent elegant patina over the decades. They rest on the original rubber suspension. Condition: very good vintage condition – original leather with a regular and elegant patina, free from stains, tears, or dry areas. The original suspension is intact, the mahogany frame has been restored and is stable, with only minimal signs of use due to age. A rare collectible piece from the history of Italian design. Dimensions: approximately 150 × 80 × 67 × 35 cm (width × depth × height × seat height).
