Magnificent pair of wall lamps by Carl Fagerlund for Orrefors. Sweden, 1970s. Brass structure, which supports a sublime diffuser in thick, blown and decorated Murano glass. Excellent condition. Carl Fagerlund: Many museums, churches, and corporate headquarters house the works of Scandinavian modernist lighting designer Carl Fagerlund. Initially a professor of illustration, Fagerlund moved into the world of lighting in the 1940s with the advantage of an artist's eye. Today, his table lamps, chandeliers, wall lamps, and other lighting fixtures enrich homes and continue to captivate collectors worldwide. In the early 1940s, Fagerlund taught drawing to aspiring artists at Solbacka läroverk, a Swedish private boarding school modeled after successful institutions of its kind in the United Kingdom. Soon after, he took a job designing provocative sconces and other wall-mounted fixtures in brass and textured glass for a Stockholm manufacturing company called ASEA (Allmänna Svenska Elektriska Aktiebolaget, or General Swedish Electrical Limited Partnership). However, Fagerlund is best known for his work at Orrefors Glassworks, a legendary glassworks in Småland that achieved worldwide renown for its products after exhibiting a range of decorative objects and art glass at the 1925 International Exhibition of Modern Decorative and Industrial Arts—the major design fair that brought Art-Decor to worldwide attention. Fagerlund joined Orrefors in 1946 and, for more than three decades, designed pendant lamps, recessed lighting, a range of Murano glass works, and other richly complex mid-century modernist lighting.
