Michael Andersen & Sons ceramic table lamp, Bornholm, Denmark, 1960s

Table lamp from the 1960s by michael andersen & sons in bornholm, denmark. The lower part of the lamp foot has an ochre glaze, the upper part is in a rough natural clay finish in dark brown. The lamp is signed under the m.a&s. Base (for michael andersen & sons) and with the stamp of the 3 fish (symbol of the company) printed in fresh clay before firing. The new lampshade has a diameter of 25/18 cm and a height of 17 cm. This lamp is 46 cm high, including lampshade. The base of the lamp has a diameter of 11 cm. Jens michael andersen (1859-1931) founded the michael andersen and sons pottery (mas) in the 1880s on the island of bornholm, denmark - one of the main centres of danish pottery production in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Jens had been trained in the local pottery of hjorth. His 4 sons worked in pottery, and a son, daniel (1885-1959) developed the iconic "persian" glaze which in 1935 received the gold medal at the universal exhibition in brussels. This is the "art pottery" of the 1950s to 1970s for which mas is now best known worldwide, although some of the art deco models are exceptionally beautiful and rare. Marianne starck, originally from germany, was one of the best ceramists who contributed to the success of michael andersen & sons pottery in the twentieth century.
