The Vitra Eames Lounge Chair is a creation of American design icons Charles and Ray Eames, who made pioneering contributions to furniture and industrial design over the last century. In particular, the technique they developed for turning plywood and fiberglass into seat shells was revolutionary at the time and resulted in designs that are still produced and enjoyed today. One of the absolute icons in the repertoire of Charles (1907 – 1978) and Ray (1912 – 1988) is the chaise longue with ottoman. The famous Lounge Chair with ottoman was designed in 1956 as a gift for a couple of friends of the Eameses. The chair needed to feel warm, “like a baseball player's perfectly fitted glove,” and provide ultimate comfort to the body. Such a design also heralded a new era for the British club chair. Not only was the Lounge Chair lighter, sleeker and more modern than traditional, somewhat bulky models, it was also more comfortable.
