Set of 2 Tonneau chairs All wood Vintage original edition Steiner Excellent general condition Created in 1954 by Pierre Guariche for Steiner, the Tonneau chair, like its counterparts Amsterdam, Tulipe, Vampire, is a true icon of 20th century design. It meets in every way the imperatives imposed on post-war designers: to design mass-produced furniture at a price accessible to all. Very comfortable thanks to its flexible, round and sensual molded plywood shell, it has a modern and elegant aesthetic thanks to its thin black tubular metal base. This innovative chair is the first French plywood seat produced in series. Its seat results from the bending of a single-piece molded plywood shell whose disjointed ends are connected by screws visible at the seat level. Pierre Guariche is a designer born in 1926. He studied at the Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Arts Décoratifs and graduated in 1949. He then worked in Marcel Gascoin's studio and presented his first models at the Salon des Artistes Décorateurs and the Salon des Arts Ménagers. In 1953, he designed the legendary "Tonneau" chair for Steiner in plastic (1953) and then in folded plywood (1954). He founded the Atelier de Recherche Plastique with Joseph-André Motte and Michel Mortier in 1954. In 1957, he was appointed Artistic Director of the furniture manufacturing company Meurop. Subsequently, he shared his knowledge with students at the Ecole Supérieure d'Architecture de Tournai and the Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Arts Décoratifs in Paris. He was able to bring a personal and innovative touch to design by combining aesthetics and mass production.
