Josef Hoffmann Attributed Vienna Secession Bentwood Bench or Settee, Thonet

This exceptional bentwood bench settee was made in early 20th century and is attributed to Josef Hoffmann designed for Thonet - Mundus. This model appeared in the catalog in 1907, and was then compared to the more common J. & J. Kohn model, however you may spot some differences in details such as circular element under the armrests instead of rhombus. The structure is made of bent beech wood that was gently cleaned and refinished with high quality oil and wax, that not only protects the wood but also gives it a fine natural look and feeling. It has been newly upholstered in Hoffmann Adler Charcoal, a contemporary production based on an original Josef Hoffmann textile design for the Wiener Werkstätte, dating from circa 1915. The striking black-and-ivory geometric pattern creates a particularly appropriate dialogue between the upholstery and the architecture of the bench, bringing together Hoffmann's characteristic approach to furniture and textile design. The upholstery fabric is woven in England from 95% cotton and 5% linen and is suitable for upholstery use. Presented in brilliant restored condition, this settee is both stable and fully prepared for everyday use, promising not only enduring functionality but also unparalleled sophistication. A highly distinctive example of Viennese bentwood furniture from the beginning of the 20th century, combining the elegant curves of the bentwood tradition with the rigorous geometry of the Vienna Secession.
