Candle holders signed by Jean Austruy

Very beautiful cave rat / ceramic candlestick signed Jean Austruy, a famous French ceramist from the post-war period. This piece features an original and sculptural shape, composed of a bowl accommodating the central candlestick and a large characteristic circular handle. The ceramic is covered with a superb speckled glaze in shades of beige, grey, brown, and ochre, with a decoration of drips and wavy lines created around the edge. The whole has a strong presence and perfectly illustrates the work of Jean Austruy, who combined utilitarian forms, intricately designed handles, and glazes with rich and textured effects. Jean Austruy (1910-2012), a ceramist based in Saint-Marcellin, belongs to that generation of artists who contributed to the revival of French ceramics after the war.
