Antique pine commode – Central Europe (c.1880–1910) Dimensions: Length: 123 cm Depth: 58 cm Height: 98 cm. Style: Rustic. Materials and techniques: Pine wood. Place of origin: Central Europe. Period: Early 20th century. Date of manufacture: Around 1900. Condition: Good. Wear is consistent with age and use. This antique commode was made in Central Europe at the end of the 19th century, at a time when domestic furniture combined everyday functionality with artisanal craftsmanship. Pieces like this were found in many homes in Austria, Germany, or Bohemia, where pine was widely used for household furniture. Made from solid pine, the commode features a sturdy and balanced structure composed of three large drawers intended for storing clothes, linens, and household textiles. Its design is simple and harmonious, characteristic of utilitarian furniture from Central Europe during this period. The white porcelain knobs and metal lock entries create a delicate contrast with the warm hue of the wood. The traditional joinery visible in the drawers attests to a handcrafted construction designed to last. Throughout its life, the piece was painted, a common practice for domestic furniture in the 19th and early 20th centuries. During restoration, this layer of paint was carefully removed, revealing the natural colour and texture of the pine.
