Ancient African mask from the Sénoufo (Ivory Coast) known as Kpélié, used in Poro ceremonies, an initiatory society that structures the transmission of knowledge. The mask dates from the mid-20th century, made of hard wood with a natural brown-black patina. Hand-carved, the mask represents an elongated face with half-closed eyes and is topped with a horned headdress symbolizing the power of the buffalo. It serves as a tool for initiation and spiritual protection in Sénoufo tradition. In the initiatory dance, the mask celebrates the feminine ideal, as well as meditation between the living and ancestors. A superb ethnographic piece. I do not have a certificate of authenticity; the estimate is based on similar masks. Overall good condition. Note slight losses at the back of the horns and a small crack under the chin, see photos. Dimensions: Width: 25 cm. Height: 75 cm. Depth: 11 cm. Weight: 6300 gr. Fast and careful shipping.
