Maralunga sofa, black leather, Vico Magistretti, first edition, Cassina, 1973. This is an original first edition from the 1970s, featuring the original black leather. The backrest can be raised or lowered for total comfort. It won the Compasso d'Oro award in 1979. The Maralunga is characterised by what appears to be a slouched backrest, but is actually a height-adjustable headrest, operated by a bicycle chain that runs beneath the soft foam cushions. The result is a sofa that serves two functions: it acts as a backdrop for social conversations and a frame for solo relaxation. "My intention, with Feal, was to design an object that represents a whole range of interior architectures with a sense of familiarity, " Magistretti said about the design. "Two positions, two possible uses, two different ways to create one's own space within a room.".
