From 1935 to 1937, at the school of fine arts in bordeaux, jean-jacques prolongeau studied ceramics with rené buthaud (1886-1986), who then taught decoration. Demobilized in 1940, he moved to perpignan to create murals commissioned by the city and oil portraits. At the same time, he completed his training as a ceramicist in the roux workshop, before opening his own workshop. He met raoul dufy (1877-1953) in 1943, with whom he actively collaborated. Their earthenware pieces, often decorated with bathers, bear both signatures (r and p). Following dufy's death in 1953, jean-jacques prolongeau worked with the sétois painter françois desnoyer (1894-1972), while creating a personal work of ceramics. In 1944, the artist taught at the perpignan drawing school, which he reorganized into a municipal school of fine arts, which he directed from 1945 to 1960. In 1960, he was appointed director of the national school of decorative arts in limoges. Retired, he returned in 1980 to perpignan. His painter's ceramics tackles figurative themes ranging from the portrait of great tenderness and intensity, to floral and animali motifs.
