"Djinn" armchair by Olivier Mourgue for Airborne, 1965

French work, edition c.1970. H 67 X W 67 X D 70 cm. Tubular steel structure, foam and cotton velvet. Very good condition. A low seat made from a single piece, with no visible legs or armrests, and a detached backrest in the shape of a shield. The curved steel structure and its strapping are completely hidden under the foam: only a continuous silhouette remains. Olivier Mourgue designed the Djinn series in 1964-1965 for Airborne. The name refers to djinns, spirits from Muslim tradition capable of changing form. Stanley Kubrick furnished the orbital station in 2001: A Space Odyssey with it, which permanently established the series as the image of futuristic seating. A specimen is included in the collections of the Centre Pompidou. Two identical armchairs are available, fully reupholstered in Kvadrat cotton velvet. They are sold individually or as a pair.
