The three rectangular shelves made of solid pitch pine, with softened corners, are arranged on robustly turned baluster columns, rings, and bands, with the rhythm tapering towards the top. The four upper corners are crowned with decorative turned finials in pear and flame shapes, and the piece rests on small flattened feet. The flame-like grain of the pitch pine, blonde and reddish, enlivens each surface. This type of wall shelf, also known as a "fancy piece of furniture, " was very popular during the Second Empire: the pitch pine, imported from North America, was appealing due to its decorative grain, and mechanical turning allowed for these lively columns and finials. Condition report: Good overall condition. The shelf has a beautiful honey patina, with superficial marks and wear from use on the surfaces, and a sound structure. A practical and charming shelf for displaying books and objects in an office, kitchen, or a family home bedroom.
