Important Pair of Modernist Wrought Iron Andirons with Ring Finials

This impressive and imposing pair of modernist andirons — described as "important" due to their exceptional scale and artistic quality — represents French decorative ironwork at the highest level. Each piece, measuring fifty-one centimetres in height, is constructed from flat forged iron plate assembled into a boldly simplified form: a tall vertical shaft topped with a large tubular circular ring, all resting on an anchor-shaped base, with flat iron bars extending in angular diagonals. The overall silhouette — ring, shaft, anchor — is both architecturally powerful and sculpturally accomplished. The circular ring finial, formed from a cylindrical circle of forged iron, constitutes the dominant visual element, its simple perfection contrasting with the angular geometry of the base. The vertical shaft, made from thick flat plate, connects these two elements with disciplined austerity, its flat surfaces capturing the light from the fire and creating a subtle play of shadows on the hearth floor.
