We are delighted to offer for sale 1 of the 6 beautiful Windsor chairs made from solid elm, hand-sawn and dating from around 1860. The antique Windsor chair is a country piece of furniture that brings charm and character. These chairs, which appeared in the late 16th century and became more common in the 18th and 19th centuries, are made from local woods such as oak, elm, fruitwoods, and, more rarely, yew. Many eclectic artisans from villages made various objects and began crafting pieces of country furniture like the Windsor chair. Each chair was often custom-made, explaining the design similarities with different sizes. The seats are beautifully carved from solid wood, very comfortable due to years of use. The armrests are formed by steam-bending the wood, giving them a lovely curve and a smooth surface to the touch. Some chairs also feature steam-bent support bars. Sitting on an antique Windsor chair that has been used for over 200 years brings a rich patina, character, and a colour that develops over time. These chairs often show old repairs and adaptations, mainly at the joinery levels. Each chair is thoroughly checked, and the frames are glued and secured by an in-house carpenter to ensure 100% stability and strength. This one is made of elm, identifiable by the saw marks under the base, with a seat that has a beautiful patina, a true piece of furniture art. Dimensions: Height 90.5 cm, Width 53 cm, Depth 51 cm, Seat Height 42.5 cm. All measurements are taken at the widest point. Condition: good, wear consistent with age and use, slight discolouration.
