Bordeaux Commode - France, Bordeaux region - Louis XV period, mid-18th century Commode made of solid walnut and walnut veneer, with a strongly curved front and rounded sides in a corbin beak shape, opening with three rows of drawers arranged over three levels. Each drawer features a moulded, scrolled frame, characteristic of Bordeaux furniture from the Louis XV period. The moulded top, slightly overhanging, follows the general curve of the piece. The drawer panels are adorned with geometric marquetry in walnut frieze, highlighting the natural grain of the wood. The sides, also veneered, are curved and understated, without added decoration, in line with regional productions from the South-West. The lower apron is cut and scrolled, forming an elegant undulating movement, resting on four curved, arched feet, finished with discreet scrolls. The whole piece reflects a harmonious balance between sturdiness and elegance. The gilded bronze ornamentation includes drop handles with floral rosettes, finely chiselled, as well as rocaille lock entries centred on each drawer, featuring asymmetrical motifs typical of the Louis XV repertoire. The bronzes are uniform and well-proportioned. This piece is attributable to quality Bordeaux craftsmanship, identifiable by the strength of the curve, the thickness of the woods, the decorative sobriety, and the mastery of sculpture. It comes from an Anjou château, attesting to its long-standing presence in an aristocratic or upper bourgeois context. The piece shows signs of old restorations, with no notable alteration to the structure or original design. The patina is warm and deep, revealing careful preservation. Overall in good condition.
