This is an original postmodernist dining chair model no. 45, designed by josef macek and produced by ton furniture company in the late 1980’s czechoslovakia. As a result of europe splitting into the west and east after the war, ton was founded as a direct evolution of the thonet company in 1953. It was labelling its products as ton despite still using thonet factories and workers, technologies as well as owning some of their original furniture patents rights. This chair dates back to the late 1980s and was designed in the postmodernist style. The main design feature is the tall backrest/back legs made of three bended and angled cylinder pieces with four vertical upright supports. The other significant part is the strong support underneath the seat which is beautifully bended into this organic shape in the greatest tradition of the thonet bending technique. The wood is in dark brown finish which nicely compliments the light blue colour of the fabric seat. Josef macek, the designer of this chair is a very interesting figure. Throughout his career he designed over 800 pieces, some of them are now considered as iconic and some of the best examples of czech design at the time. Despite all of his incredible dedication, hard work and unique talent, macek is still relatively unknown creator and his work is sadly appreciated only by a small number of design enthusiasts. This chair is in great vintage condition. The chair has got only absolute minimal wear gained from is use over the years. The original fabric was damaged beyond repair and therefore was replaced by a new one.
