Description
18th century portrait of king vittorio amedeo III of savoy oil on canvas, 86 X 67 cm with frame, 114 X 93 cm the same expressive attitude, in whose confident gaze a feeling of authentic goodness shines through, the extremely characteristic hairstyle and the insignia of the power allow us to recognize in the portrait of king vittorio amedeo III of savoy (turin, june 26, 1726 – moncalieri, october 16, 1796). Son of charles emmanuel III and polissena of hesse-rheinfels-rotenburg, he was removed from power for years by his father who considered him to have little competence in political matters. After many years spent in the shadow of his father, in 1773 he inherited the scepter of the kingdom of sardinia. Intolerant of the closed climate of customs and thinking of his father's reign, he dismissed the excellent ministers who had assisted charles emmanuel iii, including giovanni battista lorenzo bogino, and appointed his favorites, who were not equally capable, then abandoned the previous job reform of the savoyard monarchy, except towards the army. Once the french revolution broke out, he offered hospitality to the count of artois, his son-in-law, as well as to representatives of legitimist emigration and removed the savoy ambassador to paris. Relations with france became increasingly tense, until (1792) french armies invaded savoy and nice, annexed by france. His attempt at recovery (1793), with the help of the austrian army, was fruitless; the military situation, which also worsened because of the sardinian revolt of gm angioj and worsened completely with the defeat of loano (1795) and montenotte and millesimo (1796), separated from the austrians, was forced to sign the armistice of cherasco. With the peace of paris (1796), he ceded savoy and nice to france and agreed to welcome french garrisons in piedmont.
