Description
Martres tolosane. Pair of martres tolosane earthenware plates. Circular plates, decoration of a bird in a leafy environment in shades of greens, on a white enamelled background. Openwork border. Signed on the reverse (one martres france, the other of the faiencerie brand). Decorative pair, in excellent condition. 22 cm in diameter. The story of martres-tolosane is also that of a jealously guarded secret. The art of earthenware has been written for almost three centuries, without ever interrupting production. Martres-tolosane's earthenware business began in 1739, when joseph delondre, a faience painter from bordeaux, signed one of the very first pieces of earthenware made with martens-tolosane: a beard dish in shades of blues on a white background.
